Annie was plugging along at basically the same level for years on the guitar.  She could play a few chords, strum patterns, even finger pick a bit.  But many of her favorite songs had barre chords in them and she was afraid she had to be from the “special, talented people planet” to be able to play them.  In the end her desire to play songs that meant so much to her won out and she began taking lessons with me.A year later with a manageable practice regimen amidst her crazy, busy life she’s doing it!And so can you. Now’s your chance to join me for an afternoon workshop, Play Like A Rock Star during my first trip to Dallas, Texas in 8 years.  The workshop is being held in Oak Cliff on Saturday, April 19th from 1-3:30 p.m.  Space is limited to 15 participants.  Registration for the workshop includes and is also your r.s.v.p. to my 8 p.m. house concert at the same location.  You’ll be sent the address when you register.

“Janet has a very good approach to teaching guitar.  After our first class, I could tell she is a life-long teacher, is truly passionate about playing the guitar and spreading her knowledge to others. Janet’s 10-minutes a day practice regimen is very manageable yet very effective. Her first class was so simple and really de-mystified the guitar. I had literally no idea what I was doing, from holding the pick, to knowing what the strings and frets were and what they did. Especially during the first few classes, Janet was aware and was sure to address of all the common discouraging roadblocks beginners face. Janet was overwhelmingly positive and encouraging, reminding everyone “you have to make bad art to make good art” and continuously reminding everyone in class that of course you are not going to be a maestro immediately, but like anything, it is not rocket science and you can learn anything you put your mind to.

Janet’s ‘strum torture’ technique is genius. You’ll see when you get there.”

Tim Fater – Student at The Passim School of Music

By the end of the workshop you’ll know:

1. How to make friends with barre chords

2. How to change the key of a song so it contains only open chords, and not be capo dependent.

3. Information about basic chord structure
(why DO they call it “A7” and “Dm”?)

4. A few basic guitar techniques that you’ll learn in the context of playing a song or two (like how to properly hold a flat pick for optimal volume control and tone).

5. How to practice playing and singing at the same

“If you’ve ever wanted to learn to play guitar, you’ll want to see the one and only Janet Feld! She is simply THE BEST person to learn from and here’s why: 1. She is an insanely talented guitarist/singer/songwriter in her own right. 2. No one will guide you through learning guitar and trying something new with more compassion and love (that’s right!) than she will! 3. When your fingers are screaming with pain and you’re wondering why you started this whole thing anyway, she won’t let you throw in the towel because she knows you want this SO badly! I speak from experience, as I was lucky enough to meet her and have the amazing opportunity to train with her for 3+ years. My 6 year old Ian did too (see picture above – check out that devotion on his face!) There is NO better teacher for adults and kids alike! Janet is the real deal, people. A rare find. Oh, and 4. She’s really funny.”

Leslie Roberts Belkner, owner The Paint Corner Art Bar, Cambridge, Mass.
